Sardines: Dr. Bowden calls them “health food in a can.’’ They are high in omega-3’s, contain virtually no mercury and are loaded with calcium. They also contain iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese as well as a full complement of B vitamins.
How to eat: Choose sardines packed in olive or sardine oil. Eat plain, mixed with salad, on toast, or mashed with dijon mustard and onions as a spread.

There’s gotta be a way to ease into sardine eating. They’re so hard to stomach. Anything complement them well enough to counteract the weird flavor?

  1. I remember from back when I was little that my grandpa LOVED sardines. He would eat them on saltines all the time. I thought they were gross, but I think nostalgia would allow me to easily stomach them. You can also do what the French do when eating something disgusting – throw a lot of spicy mustard on it.

  2. Yikes – not sure there is a good way to eat it. The only way I have found it passable is mixed with a Caesar dressing in small quantities on a salad. The more authentic Italian restaurants serve it that way. I know Bucca De Beppo serves it that way and it seems like I had it that way at another place here in Austin but I can’t remember where it was now….Bucca comes to mind because it’s STRONG in their salads. Apparently it’s very much a Mediterranean/French Riviera taste. The Moroccans love em.

  3. i know milto’s puts it on their salads by default, but they usually ask to make sure you want them. i tried it once. once.
