Austin City Limits – 2008 ACL Fest Lineup

logo_fest.gifI glanced at the headliners at first, and I was mostly unimpressed:

Mostly kinda meh. I mean, Beck’s cool, and of course so is David Byrne – if you will even be able to hear some of his more delicate arrangements. I wouldn’t mind seeing Spiritualized again, if they could somehow magically reinvent themselves as they were a decade or more ago. Band of Horses is decent. Foo Fighters would be ok to see in a big outdoor setting. And don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t mind seeing a lot of those acts, but I’m not jumping up and down to see them either. Upon looking further down the list:

Some decent smaller acts, really, and finally some modern relevance (if you don’t count Vampire Weekend above – and I don’t). But I’m not sure how some translate to the festival scene. I mean, Stars was great at Stubbs outdoors, so that might work. Jose Gonzales fit perfectly on the intimate Parish stage, but outside, during the day getting drowned out by Hot Chip thumping a few hundred yards away? It’s going to be an interesting ACL, good in ways I’m sure, but one I probably won’t mind missing this year.

  1. One thing I really liked about last year was seeing bands I had never heard of. I hope Heineken sponsors it again, and not Bud Lite.

  2. That’s a bit disappointing. I was really excited because Neil Young had popped up on several rumor lists over and over again – I was sure he would be playing(and then I would HAVE to go). I also saw a lot of rumors about REM, Pearl Jam, and My Morning Jacket. The only bands in that list I would really like to see is…Vampire Weekend after a long affair of liking them, then hating them(after the got so much buzz), to liking them again after I surrendered to good music – yuppies be damned. I would also like to catch Antibalas and Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings – I’m totally into all the Dap Tone Records stuff right now.

Everyone else would be cool but nothing that really moves me….Jakob Dylan? Please. MGMT might be fun although I can’t figure out if they are Tom Tom Club incarnate or just another run of the mill indie band – their styles are all over the place. Manu Chao would be cool to see…M Ward, Robert Plant, David Byrne, Gnarls barkley, Iron & Wine, Band of Horses, Gillian Welch, Gogol Bordelo, Hot Chip, Del, Beck, Jamie Lidell, and Heartless Bastards would all be decent but maybe not essential.
